The discovery and deciphering of information encoded within the human genome is perhaps the most profound of all scientific revelations. With such information brings the promise of longer, healthier lives and reduced suffering for the entire human race. As with many other major scientific discoveries, however, those involving the human genome also bring potential advances of a darker nature. There are those who endeavor to use the information from the human genome to gain wealth and power at the expense of others, and in some cases to deliberately inflict harm. Some scientists working in the fields of genomic discovery and therapeutics are determined to prevent the misuse of human genomic information. We are the Genome Conservators, a group of concerned individuals working secretly from within several of the most prominent genomic research institutes and drug companies to ensure that this important information will not be abused. We are dedicated to achieving the following goals:
As employees within many of the largest and most influential biotech companies and research institutes, we are well positioned to defend the human genome from being misused. However, there are those both inside and outside the biotech community who strongly disagree with our goals, and will resort to drastic measures to prevent us from attaining them. We cannot immediately reveal our individual identities for fear of persecution. We have been fighting the soulless commercialization of the human genome from its initial sequencing, but must remain a silent but effective opposition for now. We are all members of the human race, and as such we encourage everyone to do what they can to prevent our very own "life code" from being used inappropriately. Working together, all of humanity will benefit from our actions. |
